Week 2 CSA!

Week 2!!!!!!!! It was so nice to meet some of you new people yesterday!!! And see some familiar faces too!! The CSA interest and enthusiasm has been at an all-time high this year which just makes me feel so grateful! I’m glad you all are into what we have going on here. I’m already making plans for next season on how to improve production and manage our place even better. Every year we learn something new and can add it to the catalogue of experience. The big one this year has been irrigation and I will be working diligently on improving our water availability this fall. But we got just about .6” yesterday!!!!!! I slept amazingly last night to the sound of occasional rain on our roof and realized this morning that it has been a background (and often foreground) mental disturbance since the Spring. Seeing as how plants are generally supposed to get an inch of water per week, I’m sure the plants in the field will be as “happy” as I am to get what we got.

On to the share:

  • Garlic Scapes! - an ephemeral flower of the hardneck garlic plant. We pick them off so the plant can focus on its bulb. It also means that garlic is on the way! You can treat the scapes like garlic, dicing or mincing and using as flavoring. Or mix with some basil to make a fresh tasting pesto!

  • Broccolini - the first of the season. Fresh, tender, you don’t need to do much to this. We add to hot oil/butter mix and wilt for a couple minutes until the color changes but it will maintain its crunch. Salt and pepper.

  • 2 heads of lettuce for your salad needs. Soil will have certainly gotten in there so you will need to clean again as you cut leaves off.

  • a bag of spinach - repeat from last week because Spinach is gone until the fall. It does not like the heat of summer so I only grow it in spring and fall (and winter).

  • a bag of mixed greens - can be eaten fresh or you can cook the mix as well for a nice addition to the broccolini or a small side dish.

  • 2 cukes! First of the year. Genica made a nice cucumber salad with 2 cukes last night to top our rice and beans meal. She cubed to cukes and added a 1/2 teaspoon of salt and start with a 1/2 teaspoon of cumin to taste. She did a full teaspoon and it was “cumin-ey.” Also a dash of cayenne pepper too. Cucumbers will return.

Here are some photos from the week:

This huge dragonfly appeared out of nowhere when I was harvesting lettuce last week. It just hung out with me for a while when I was working. Beautiful.

Potentially the last cultivation of Kale across the road. Some weeds remain. Always.
